Essay Recordings produziert und vertreibt Musik – und gibt ein Beispiel dafür, wie neue Ansätze der Genreverschmelzung klingen können. Das junge Label um den charismatischen Ausnahmeproduzenten Shantel zeigt, welche unverbrauchten Ideen sich in den alten wie zeitgenössischen Melodien und Grooves regionaler Prägung verbergen, seien es die des Orients, des Balkans, Brasiliens oder Südamerikas. In die ungewöhnliche Partyserie „Bucovina-Club“ brachte Shantel den Sound der Zigeuner von einer Reise in die Heimat seiner Großeltern mit – heute tourt der „Bucovina-Club“ durch die europäischen Metropolen, hat bereits das zweite Album veröffentlicht und ist mit dem angesehenen BBC World Music Award ausgezeichnet worden. 2005 kam Señor Coconut als neuer Künstler zu Essay, um hier seinen kompletten Katalog zu veröffentlichen und um enger mit anderen Künstlern zusammen zu arbeiten. Ein Album des Essay-Acts OMFO wurde bereits von Señor Coconut produziert. Viele weitere Künstler aus unterschiedlichen Ländern und Kulturen wie Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Boom Pam oder Balkan Beat Box tragen mit ihrer Musik zum Erfolg des Musiklabels bei. Ausgeleierte Klischees wie World Music oder Ethno-Dancefloor werden dabei über Bord geworfen. Bei Essay Recordings gilt: Gute Musik hat immer Soul, Sex und Schweiß.

Essay Recordings is producing and distributing music – and setting an example of how new approaches to melting musical genres could be sounding. The young label, built around the charismatic and exceptional producer Shantel shows how many unconsumed ideas are hiding in old as well as in contemporary regional melodies and grooves, may it be from the regions of the Orient, the Balkan, Brazil or South America.

Many Essay projects give impressive proof that this approach is being fully embraced by the audience. With the unconventional party series „Bucovina-Club“, Shantel has brought back the sound of the gypsies from a trip to the homeland of his grandparents – today the „Bucovina-Club“ is touring European cities, has released the second album and has been awarded the much respected BBC World Music Award. Señor Coconut joined the label in 2005 in the perspective to release his whole catalogue here and to collaborate with artists like OMFO, who’s forthcoming album was graced by his production. Many other artists from different countries and cultures like Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Boom Pam or Balkan Beat Box contribute to the overwhelming success of the label with their music.
